PREPARED FOR CURRENT DEMANDS New developments in brewhouse technology The last decade has seen a small number of beer producers increase their control of the world-wide beer production by considerable amounts. Today the 10 biggest brewing concerns are responsible for approx. 55 per cent of the total beer production. This trend has seen the increase in capacity of individual production units. One of the results of this trend is the requirement to have a beer with a good stability during the storage and distribution phases. This article gives a brief overview of the latest technological developments and improvements made on the brewhouse level to support the brewers.

A

s a result of the evolution of the market, brewhouse suppliers have had to develop technological solutions in order that brewer could achieve certain requirements. The most common requirements could be summarised as:

CONTROLLABLE FILTRATION PROCESS The significance of register and bypass technology in precoat filtration with TFS When developing the Twin Flow System (TFS) a main objective was to enable a filtration process always controllable and adjustable with view to varying filter aids and filterabilities of the beers. Implemented by register technology and the control variable bypass, the so-called “Twin Flow”, and supported by consistent flow optimisation by means of flowstreamer, filter elements and filter vessel it offers manifold options.

– Minimal watering down when changing the media during production and cleaning.

– Variable figuration of the specific filter area load (hl/m 2metallic) with simultaneous optimal flow against the filter elements by means of the byp ...

BEER IN PET Planning principles, layout and connecting loads of filling systems The bottling of choice beers in PET still remains a big challenge to breweries and the subcontracting industry. In order to achieve a shelf life of six months, particular attention must be paid to low permeation values for O2 and CO2. The material used for bottles and closures, as well as special filling systems designed for a bottling with low oxygen uptake are also very important factors in this context. In order to ensure an unobstructed and economic operation of a PET bottling plant, it is advisable to observe some basic principles which are reasoned in the following.

Quality specifications for beer in PET Apart from the microbiological factors, the shelf-life of beer is decisively influenced by oxygen uptake and CO2 loss. Since the PET bottle isn´t gasproof, these two factors have to be observed very carefully. With choice beers, the following specifications have been established to ensu ...

A total of 93 per cent of the 231 participants from 24 countries were from Germany and Europe. PETnology was very much practising again its basic principle „connecting comPETence“. Besides topics as for example market and consumer trends, filling and sealing technologies, especially the basic material itself and „Beer in PET“ were the central issues of the conference.

Then, the EU regulation number 178/2002 which defines legal requirements for producers and traders will become effective. The present article describes an automation solution of the beverage industry which contains a comprehensive logging of charge data in the fields of production, bottling and logistics. News HENQUET – the beer of the Pharaohs On the traces of the Egyptians

Reconstruction of the beer production

Within the scope of a project work, a group of participants of the Doemens seminar “Getränkebetriebswirt” (training course for beverage business economists) concentrates at the moment on brewing the ancient Egyptian beer, which was called henquet at that time. Of course it is not only about the fabrication. In the course of this seminar, for example, the question of how such a beverage can be marketed in a brewpub shall be resolved. Apart from that, fiscal aspects (about the necessity of a beer tax) and questions concerning the correct name (can this beverage actually be called a “beer”) will also be discussed. But in order to be able to answer these questions, it is first necessary to be in the possession of the product itself. Even for the clarification of the fiscal question it is necessary for the customs authorities to possess a small am ...

BEVERAGE TREND MONITOR

BEER GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH T

he beer industry remains in fairly good shape, with volume sales up by 2.2 per cent in 2003. Growth is mainly being driven by the increasing importance of developing markets, such as China and Russia. Indeed, China has now overtaken the US as the world’s largest beer market, with total volume sales increasing by 41 per cent over the review period.

In the mature regional markets of Australasia, North America and Western Europe, as well as parts of Asia-Pacific, brewers have been struggling to achieve volume growth. This is due to a combination of weakened consumer confidence (particularly in the US and Japan) and changing consumption habits. Most of the major breweries are therefore placing an increased focus on premium beers, making them more visible and more widely available in both retail and on-trade channels.

Imports on the up In the UK, for example, 2003 saw the demise ...
