EURO-BRAZILIAN ALLIANCE Interbrew/Ambev giant still has to prove market power A giant has been committed to paper with the alliance between Interbrew and Ambev. The Euro-Brazilian brewing alliance has more than 200 brands available. Three of them are supposed to be placed globally, however, it won't be mere child's play to Interbrew and Ambev providing more than a marginal existence for Brahma in Europe and Northern America and Becks and Stella Artois in Latin America.

Sojaland Schwerin: Model enterprise for High-Quality-Products.

Why the Wild Group bought Sojaland Among other things, the Wild Group, Heidelberg, is famous for its innovative product developments. Today, the more and more diversified and demanding market of non-alcoholic beverages whose consumer groups are becoming increasingly heterogeneous and whose trends are often short-dated makes higher demands than ever before on ingredients suppliers for the beverage industry. Due to the purchase of the firm of Sojaland in Schwerin, the Wild Group is now among the leaders with a product segment in Germany which has already reached high sales figures and particularly high profits in many European states and especially in the USA: The soy product market. Together with managing director of Wild, Dr. Eugen Zeller, the BREWING AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY INTERNATIONAL visited the Sojaland model plant in Schwerin.

ACTING GLOBALLY Bericap develops special closure solutions The family owned enterprise Bericap, which originally produced metal packaging, has evolved into a global manufacturer of closure systems. This global presence and the firm’s readiness to innovate are strengths which are now reflected in Bericap’s success in addressing one of key issues facing the packaging industry today – how to store oxygen sensitive beverages in PET containers. BREWING AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY INTERNATIONAL visited the firm’s headquarters in Budenheim near Mainz, Germany, and talked to Günter Krautkrämer, general manager of Bericap Holding GmbH and chairman of the board of the Bericap group, about current developments in the beverage sector. HIGH THROUGHPUTS High degree of performance in multi-packaging palletising In the beverage industry, the growing variety of packaging and collation types requires very flexible palletising systems with high throughputs. The installation commissioned at Délifruits (Refresco Group) in France, one of the leaders on the French market for fruitor tea-based beverages, illustrates the high degree of performance of a robotic palletising unit concept for multi-packaging products.

PROMISING OUTLOOK FOR CARTONS Global markets for soft drinks In the coming years, the worldwide market for soft drinks will continue to grow. This represents a promising outlook for the beverage carton as it is one of the major packaging systems in this sector. The trend towards greater convenience will continue and will be reflected in the functionality of numerous opening and re-closing fitments as well as in innovative packaging solutions.

A

ccording to the forecasts of leading market research institutes, the world market for still, non-alcoholic drinks [1] will continue its positive growth trend over the next few years. In the four-year period (2002 to 2006) forecasters predict growth levels of 4.8 per cent. Given the prevailing somewhat bleak overall economic perspectives, this is a positive outlook for the market partners in these segment.

MORE PRECISION AND HYGIENE Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan optimizes bottling plant The Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan in Freising, oldest brewery of the world and international centre of brewing science has installed a new hose pipe in favour of a precise and hygienic bottling. The pipe has been developed and assembled by Sahlberg, specialist for hoses and fittings in Munich.

I

n Weihenstephan, where a daily throughput of about 250 000 bottles is registered, a special steel shear pipe served as a joint between the feeding conduit and the bottling machine in the past. The bottling machine has to be adjusted in height when the 0.5 l bottles are replaced by 0.3 l bottles. This often caused leakages at the slightly tightened round thread fitting the shear pipe was fixed with. As a consequence, the production came to a standstill of about 15 minutes. Absolutely leakproof, flexible connection between hose pipe and bottling machine.
