BEVERAGE TREND MONITOR

Global Beverage Closure Demand to Grow Strongly to 2012 An additional 220 billion caps and closures will be required to meet demand within the global beverage sector over the next 5 years, according to a new report entitled “Emerging Trends in Global Beverage Closures” by Canadean. he strong growth in beverage closure demand at a global level is being driven primarily by the expansion of packaged beverage consumption in large emerging markets such as China, India, Russia and Brazil.

T

However, even in the established Western European and North American markets, where packaged beverage consumption is more static, new product development and intense competition between products and brands, coupled with consumer demands for more convenience and ‘on-the-go’ packs, environmental/legislation and new technology is changing the look of the caps and closures sector. Overall the highest percentage growth over the next five year ...

A STRONG CONCEPT FOR A STRONG SECTOR Interview with Barbara Appel, organizer of the 12th PETnology Forum 2009 This year, PET packaging and filling experts came together in Cologne for their annual industry meeting. The 12th PETnology Congress was represented as a partner of Anuga FoodTec at the exhibition centre on 9th and 10th March, 2009. In addition to the many presentations, which were each integrated into theme-related sessions on specialist fields such as preform manufacture, productivity and efficiency, closure solutions or recycling, other sessions provided further opportunities for getting to know people and exchanging information. Visitors were able to discuss the latest topical questions at the event’s three workshops: “PET recycling – a discussion of current technical and economic topics”, “Making crude oil-based plastics 100 percent biodegradable by using additives” and “Predicting the top load performance of stretch blow molded bottles using FEA”. APPLICATION TO A LIMITED EXTENT Fruit juices in plastic bottles Bottles made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) have become firmly established in the soft drinks industry. For mineral water and sweet drinks, PET bottles already have a market share of over 75 per cent and this is still increasing. The introduction of plastic bottles for more sensitive products such as fruit juices are considerably more difficult. Cartons and glass bottles still dominate there. However, active oxygen-scavengers and passive barriers, coupled with light protection functionality, are to a limited extent also allowing plastic bottles to be used for fruit juices.

Current market situation PET bottles are already being employed to a limited extent for fruit juices. For traditional packaging systems such as glass bottles and cartons there is a very clear choice of available materials, but for plastic bottles the choice is very complex (Figure 1). Here, the first distinction that can be made betwee ...

OPTIMISM AND AN “UNSCRIPTED” FUTURE The Theme of the 2009 Craft Brewers Conference in Boston After years of phenomenal growth, the American craft brew industry has reached a moment where planning for any aspect of the business – from government affairs, to the supply chain, to distributor relationships – is becoming more and more difficult because of growing uncertainty in both the overall economy and in the alcoholic beverage business itself. Yet there are significant opportunities for continued growth in the industry. These were the central themes of the welcome address delivered by Charlie Papazian, President of the Brewers Association, to the more than 2 000 attendees of the 2009 Craft Brewers Conference and BrewExpo America, held at the Seaport Hotel and World Trade Center in Boston, Massachusetts, on April 22 to 24. The craft brew industry, which is now more than 1 500 breweries strong (almost 1 000 of them brewpubs), is showing clear signs of becoming a mature industry ...

BREWING AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY INTERNATIONAL

GAINING MARKET SHARES IN THE CRISIS “Market shares are more strongly subject to changes in phases of recession than in phases of growth”. This presumed coherence has now been investigated and evaluated by the German market research institute GfK in Nuremberg. Brands that gain a market share of ten per cent and more respectively in times of crisis are defined as “winner brands” by GfK. If a brand loses ten per cent and more in market shares, it is regarded as a “loser brand”. Gfk has investigated the methods of the winner and loser brands of past periods of economic downturn and, in addition, compared these data with the corresponding figures between 2004 and 2006 when there was no crisis. This revealed significant differences. “The impact of innovations”, as GfK declares, “is clearly higher in times of crisis”. Taking action pays off, obviously. If you e.g. prefer launching products to simply waiting for the ...

CONTINUOUS BREWHOUSE First industrial results In the last two decades, major advances in performance in batch brewhouses have been achieved mainly by introducing fine milling technology. Despite these important improvements, breweries keep asking for further productivity increases together with a reduction of utilities consumption and waste disposal. The likelihood of further improvements using the current method of batch brewing is limited. Only a conceptual change can respond to the current and future demands of the brewing industry. These inquiries made Meura rethink the brewhouse technology and ended in a continuous brewhouse concept, called the “Meurabrew”. Jeroen Vandenbussche He joined the MEURA company in April 1998, where he industrialised the yeast management systems (propagation, pre-oxygenation and vitalisation). Today he is responsible for the Sales & Marketing Department in the company.

With immediate effect, my daily work will therefore mainly include staff management/internal services, member support, strategic marketing and not least finances. This is a great challenge and I am very conscious of its consequences. With the help of selected colleagues and a management consulting service, the executive committee has made a great effort to develop the new strategy during the past few months which will have to be realised promptly now. Moreover, our enjoyment academy has developed extremely positively and Dr. Stempfl urgently needs some support to spend more time exactly for this subject in the future. We can see a good opportunity here to promote Doemens even further and develop an even better marketing for our beer sommelier courses. We hav ...

Global beer consumption increased by less than 2 per cent in 2008 Global beer consumption grew by less than 2 per cent in 2008 as economic recessions led to a “sharp slowdown” in markets around the world. “Beer is allegedly recession-resistant”, was often heard, but economic turmoil seems to be slowing beer consumption all across the globe. Sales are dropping in countries from the U.S. to Russia and Brazil because consumers are left with less money to spend in beer. Last year in the U.S. shipments increased at their slowest since 2005. Some of the breweries reactions to adjust to the drop in demand are price increases, others concentrate on cost-cutting. Two years ago, beer consumption still showed an increase of 5.7 per cent. In 2007 global beer consumption grew by 5.6 per cent, but a sharp slowdown to less than 3 per cent growth was already forecasted for 2008.
