BREWING AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY INTERNATIONAL

ABOUT WASHINGTON D.C., CALIFORNIA, OREGON AND MUNICH This year’s Craft Brewers Conference (CBC) in Washington, D.C., was once again a smashing success (see page 12). The biggest news of 2016, the last full calendar year for statistics: In just a single year, the number of craft breweries in the United States had increased by an incredible 826 new entries into the market! Upon more careful examination, however, this otherwise fabulous development also contained an ominous kernel of less welcome news: The dynamic growth of the overall craft brew industry over the past few years shows signs of slowing down. For instance, the number of visitors to the CBC remained largely unchanged from the previous year, at roughly 13,300; and the U.S. craft brew industry’s “mere” 6 percent growth in output volume and 10 percent growth in sales revenues lagged well behind equivalent statistics in the previous years. While the 2016 growth ra ...

Increase in beer production According to the official report, during the first month of this year, the production of alcoholic beverages increased by 0.3 percent, compared to the same period last year. By January 2017, establishments engaged in the production of alcoholic beverages produced 26.9 million liters of alcoholic bever ages. Production for the same month of 2016, reached 26.8 million liters.

The Comptroller‘s report confirmed that beer was the most produced, while all other alcoholic beverages showed negative numbers (gin, rum, seco, and vodka). The report also notes that for the month of January there was no production of anise, wine and whiskey. The figures of the entity in dicate that 25.9 million liters of beers of different national brands were produced during the month. It should be noted that in the same period last year beer production stood at 25.5 million liters. This means an increase of 425 thousand liters during t ...

SMALLER BEER FORMATS GATHER MOMENTUM IN THE UK The “less is more” ethos is alive and well among UK consumers when it comes to their alcohol drinking habits, with both alcohol moderation and avoidance widespread. A third of UK adults limited/reduced their alcohol consumption compared to what they normally drink at some point in the 12 months to November 2016, according to Mintel’s Attitudes towards Low- and Non-Alcoholic Drink – UK, February 2017 report. A further one in five consumers eschewed alcohol completely.

A

gainst this backdrop, volume sales of alcohol are under pressure, putting the onus firmly on manufacturers to innovate in order to add value to the market. Responsible drinking behavior is clearly evident among beer drinkers, with one in two noting that they are careful not to exceed the recommended weekly units of alcohol when drinking beer. Whether or not such claimed behavior is actually true, this shows ...

BACK IN THE CAPITAL Craft Brewers Conference 2017 in Washington, D.C.

Last year American craft brewers were able to achieve six percent growth by production volume. These and other figures were presented at this year’s Craft Brewers Conference and BrewExpo America, which took place from April 10 to 13, 2017. The Brewers Association (BA) had, as in previous years, chosen Washington, D.C., as the conference location and around 13,300 visitors and over 900 exhibitors made their way to the capital of the United States. The subject of Quality Management was the focus of a podium discussion and several presentations throughout the event.

he CBC 2017 kicked off on April 10 with eleven excursions to breweries in the Washington area. The businesses visited ranged from the small Farm Brewery, which grows some of its own brewing barley and hops, to brewpubs with restaurants attached, to American as well as internationally active craft breweries. In the ev ...

MASTER PLAN A big beer player in the small state of Malta It’s a special kind of line for a brewery in a special location: located on a small island in the Mediterranean, positioned precisely equidistant from the European and African mainlands, Simonds Farsons Cisk produces around two-thirds of total demand for beer in the mini-state of Malta. A new, highly complex line now combines filling and packaging of returnable glass, non-returnable glass, and cans. the general trend away from out-ofhome consumption has not spared Malta either – despite tourism, open-air restaurants and mild temperatures almost all the year round.

The glass bottles, returnables and non-returnables alike, use the same filler, a Krones Modulfill HES.

FOR STABILIZATION AND DIVERSITY Efficient, cost-saving solutions in an evolving brewing landscape Beer consumers today are more aware of their choices and their ability to have more say in what they consume. For brewers this means that they need to provide beers in consistently high quality to satisfy the consumers’ demand. So the challenges breweries face depend largely on their processes. BREWING AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY INTERNATIONAL talked to Joana Teresa Carneiro, Business Line Manager Beverages at DSM Food Specialties, about these challenges and the consequences for small and large breweries. BREWING AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY INTERNATIONAL: What would you say are the key challenges for today’s brewers Joana Teresa Carneiro: At DSM, we see that the challenges breweries face depend largely on their process and the beer segment they target. Established beer brands and large breweries are more focused on making their processes more efficient, while the craft segment, for example, is m ...

TOGETHER WE ARE STRONG PureAir machine enhances piston compressors’ effectiveness for oil-free compressed air generation The compressed air stations at the Früh brewery, renowned far beyond the Rheinland for its Kölsch beer, rely on two oil-free CompAir compressors: a piston compressor from the Champion series, which is used in many breweries, and a regulatedspeed PureAir machine, which works based on an innovative compression principle. Both compressors were selected and installed by Hermann Mönnichs Drucklufttechnik GmbH who has been working with Früh since 1972. As you approach the Cölner Hofbräu P. Josef Früh KG premises, it soon becomes clear that the popularity of Kölsch beer extends well beyond its home town. The vast amount of beer brewed on the 100,000 m2 site is far too much to be drunk by the residents of Cologne alone. Früh Kölsch is actually a nationwide brand sold through large chain stores and specialist beverage wholesalers. Thanks to its fresh taste, the ...

A PRACTICAL EXAMINATION OF STRESS TESTING Migration of packaging-related substances from PET bottles in mineral water The beverage industry is focusing increasingly on the possible migration of substances from PET bottles and the regulations for migration tests. The established and widely used stress test “40 °C / 10 days” is outdated, at least with regard to compliance testing according to the legal requirements. But what does this mean in practice To answer this question, SGS Institut Fresenius tested various mineral waters for migration after storage.
