AFTER FLOATING ON AIR, OPTIMIZED CONTINUOUS OPERATION Individual Conveying Solutions for PET Bottles Georg Mundt* Horst Böcker**

PET. A trade has probably been seldom so entangled in such intensive discussion as regarding these three letters. PET – this word has been the subject of constant discussion the last few years. The opinions are numerous and above all exceptionally varied. Although all unanimously agreed that consumers would remain glass supporters about five years ago, this is now forgotten today. The consumer has set the beverage trade straight. There is no dislike whatsoever among consumers regarding the lightweight, convenient PET container. Steadily growing sales figures speak volumes. The consumer is the one to decide, beverage businesses are forced to adjust if they want to actively participate in the action in the market. KHS as the partner of the beverage trade, has constantly further developed PET system technologies. Today, solutions are available t ...

PET-ASEPT-BOTTLING PLANT IN PRACTICAL OPERATION Cold aseptic treatment at Adelholzener Alpenquellen Anton Schindlbeck*

The Adelholzener Alpenquellen has started operating the first and at the moment most modern bottling plant for the cold-aseptic bottling of plain water, fruit juice and mixed drinks into PET bottles. This prototype line which has been newly developed in close collaboration of Adelholzen and Krones, supports the enterprise´s philosophy to be only satisfied with the highest quality and manage completely without cold sterilants during the bottling process. nly that way the planned introduction of non-returnable PET packages in the plain water and soft drinks market segment was possible. The line works with a new PET-asept-bottlingprocedure, a Krones three stage concept with injector-rinser-filler and newly designed clean-room technology.

ON-THE-FLY CAPACITY INCREASE Open HMI for Brewery Filter Systems

The global consolidation efforts within the brewing industry continue to intensify and with it, the technological ”armament” by its main players. These aspects also drove the recent expansion of the filter systems at a Polish brewery – they were automated and equipped with a tailormade, industry-specific PCbased HMI by Swiss specialists without interrupting operations.

Kompania Piwowarska is now second in the Polish market and has exceeded the magical number of 5 million hectoliters of annually brewed beer. This number corresponds to 28% of the national beer consumption. The joint venture company has also become the exclusive distributor of Pilsner Urquell (Pilsen) in Poland.

Great potential for growth The reputation of one of the most popular beer brand in Poland (”Lech Premium”) obligates (the most popular brand by sales volume is Tyskie Gronie), thus, the Polish brewer sp ...

FOREIGN ACTIVITIES OF THE GERMAN BREWERY GROUPS AND LARGE-SCALE PRIVATE BREWERIES Interests in breweries and licensed beer production abroad, 1998 rate During the last decade, the large German breweries have made an increased effort to gain interests, or take over breweries abroad, apart from their licensed beer production activities abroad. These activities will yet be fortified in the future, as the German beer market can hardly be extended. ased on an interview of all well-known brewery groups and private breweries, the following schedule on the one hand lists a ranking of shares or takeovers of foreign breweries, and on the other hand it shows the licensed beer production activities in the various foreign countries up to now. INTERBEV: THE IDEA MACHINE Tales of blue oxen and chocolate beer What a wild fair the InterBev is! Every two years, mainly the US beverage and package industry presents its new designs at varying places. From December 4, to December 6, 2000, mainly the medium sized suppliers surprised again with “wild” innovations in New Orleans. Apart from beer with a chocolate aroma and beer in PET-big mouth bottles, mainly the wide range of offers of Functionaland Energy-drinks was very impressive. No matter whether Dark Dog and Blue Ox as an answer to Red Bull, or SoBe’s Adrenaline Rush: Not only the products (which meanwhile rather coincide with the European ideas of taste), but more the brand names, positioning and packages demonstrate the innovative power of the US beverage industry. Even if the InterBev is rather a small fair if you apply international, particularl ...

WORLD NEWS AUSTRIA:

WINE AND BEER CONSUMPTION The Austrians consumed more wine and beer in 1999/2000 than in the years before. According to calculations of “Statistik Austria”, 1.2 l (plus 4 per cent) more wine per capita were consumed in the past wine business year (September 1, 1999 to August 31, 2000), compared with the previous year 1998/99 with a per capita consumption of 31.8 l wine (including 2.6 l sparkling wine). The main reason for this increase was the very good grape harvest 1999. The exports, mainly to Germany, could be increased by 60 % to 0.37 m hl. The total domestic consumption amounted to 2.62 m hl, about 42 000 of which were processed to spirits or wine vinegar respectively. The breweries could as well register production and consumption increases. The beer production amounted to 9.26 m hl (plus one per cent). Imports with 0.48 m hl (minus three per cent) and exports with 0.50 m hl (minus eight per cent) clearly declined. The per capita consumption ...

STEP BY STEP Tsingtao Beer Strives to Become A Giant Among World Brands Tsingtao Brewery, one of China's first and largest beer manufacturers, has set its sights on becoming one of the world's top ten breweries by 2003, the year of the company's 100th anniversary. Built in 1803 in Qingdao (Tsingtao), a coastal city in east China's Shandong province, by F.H. Smith Co. of Germany, the brewery was a small operation turning out some 2,000 tons of lager, a brownish beer, and a small amount of dark beer. uring years of political upheaval in China, the company changed hands, first to the Japanese in the two world wars, then to the government under the Kuomintang, or the Nationalist Party in 1945, and to the people's government under the Communist Party since 1949, where it has remained since. Tsingtao won recognition as the best beer in China in 1963 when it was awarded a gold medal by the Ministry of Light Industry. Experts have attributed Tsingtao beer's high quality mainly to the use of ...
