QUALITY AT THE TOP Inspecting bottle closures safeguards the quality of a product The quality of a product is used more and more as a sales argument. Bad quality can result in consumers boycotting a product. There have been clear signs in recent months that this is particularly true in the food processing industry. If a product acquires a bad name it is extremely difficult to rectify the situation even with valid arguments. The consequences are reflected in the medium to long-term sales figures. In the beverage industry it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep track of the possibilities Glass bottles available to check the quality with crown corks of a product according to latest Crown corks are (still) the most technological developments. widely used type of closure in This is due to the large variety Europe for brewery products. ADHESIVES FOR THE BOTTLE LABELLING Important aspects of application technology Adhesives for the bottle labelling in the beverage industry are complex material systems which have to do justice to the very different conditions in a highly technicalized environment to a high degree. Apart from a high product quality, mainly the standard profile which always varies very much in practise is important for the safe functionality of these adhesives in the bottling process. This is stressed by the fact that the very same adhesive type used in various companies is judged from being excellent to being completely unsuitable.

he reason for this is that in the labelling adhesive processing a variety of rather different parameters influences the labelling result and the adhesive. Therefore the used adhesive has to be able to work to some extent as a balance between the very variable application parameters and technical conditions in the bottling process. This is an extremely difficult ...

FULL SPEED AHEAD Flash evaporator versus boiler Flash evaporators increasingly outstrip conventional boilers. The prompt reaction time and the little space required are essential characteristics of these modern apparatus. In many applications, however, the “low-pressure-litre-product” argument is supposed to be decisive – which makes the building of a separate boiler room unnecessary. ompared with conventional boilers, flash evaporators even have various special merits: They need only 25 per cent of the space a threepass boiler requires and even weight and water content of the flash evaporator are considerably lower. It can therefore produce steam much more quickly after a cold start. Usually, five minutes are sufficient. A threepass boiler needs 30 to 90 minutes for this. The energy loss involved with the heating-up of a threepass boiler which is operated eight hours per day and needs a starting time of one hour, amounts to 12 per cent. The flash evaporator on the other hand n ...

A NEW PLANT – A NEW LOOK Thüringer Fruchtsaft GmbH with new production facilities Positive market development

The new production plant of Thüringer Fruchtsaft GmbH, Rudolstadt.

10 years after Thüringer Fruchtsaft GmbH in Rudolstadt was retransferred to private ownership the company is still expanding and has invested in a new production plant and a new labelling system. Due to the previous years’ results the company has every reason to view the future optimistically. ituated in the beautiful landscape of the Thuringian Forest, the company Thüringer Fruchtsaft GmbH / Rudolstadt can look back on roots that go back to the year 1927. With more than 70 years of experience in the field of fruit processing, the company follows the maxim of offering only products that meet highest quality standards. Since 1990, the company has been producing juices and nectars under the brand name “Schlör”, a well-known label characterized by high quality and

A SYMBOL OF VALENCE AND STANDARD Aluminium bottleneck labels – more than “just a label” When a French winegrower had the idea to mark his filled bottles with a glued label at the beginning of the 18th century, the reason for that was presumably was a marking of his product, or an information on the contents of the bottle. The fact that this winegrower had thus also taken a first step to the marketing of his product was certainly unconcious to him. A wine bottle just looked like a wine bottle had to look. The contents, the valence, or the costs were revealed by a piece of paper for the first time. hree centuries later, our beverage scene could hardly be imagined without a labelling of the brands. Not only because the legislator stipulates an obligatory public information, but because even today, a beer bottle remains a beer bottle. Apart from the transport of information, the paper label has doubtlessly assumed marketing functions to a great extent. The technical possibilities to ...

NEW STRATEGIES The Non-Carbonated Beverage Revolution Coke and Pepsi have joined and now appear to be leading the non-carbonated beverage revolution that is reshaping the beverage business. The top marketers of carbonated soft drinks (CSDs) have adopted new growth strategies. Though hardly moving away from CSDs, they currently compete with each other and endeavor to increase their businesses by aggressively entering the realm of non-carbonated beverages. The CSD market is already highly concentrated (Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola account for approximately three-quarters of the domestic market). The leaders in that category are now seeking to strengthen their positions in the overall non-alcoholic beverage industry. CocaCola and PepsiCo both now have bottled waters, ready-to-drink (RTD) iced teas and coffees, Red Bull-style energy drinks and other New Age beverage brands in addition to their core CSDs. The companies have also consummated deals that place them in the forefront of the emergi ...

AMBITIOUS GOALS Shanghai’s market leader builds brewery in Kunshan and already needs to extend it Where other international brewery concerns have long resigned themselves to the circumstances and had to manage without a lot of what they had expected from the Chinese brewery market, the Japanese Suntory concern has brewed itself a modest market power in the Shanghai environment. The brewery in Kunshan which was newly built only a few years ago, is now expecting its extension which will almost double the capacity.

In Kunshan, beer is brewed in a new brewery for Shanghai and its region.

BREWING AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY INTERNATIONAL

THE UNIVERSAL BREWING AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY MEETS IN MUNICH Every four years it is time again: From the 20th to the 28th of September, the entire brewing and beverage industry will meet in Munich to get information on the latest trends and innovations. Many of the exhibitors have – according to a survey of our publishing house – further developed their products especially for the fair, realized new applications or tested new technologies. So we can be keenly looking forward to what they will come up with for the drinctec-interbrau 2001. But the fair at its new location is not only an information centre. Numerous discussion platforms and exhibitor presentations invite for a constructive exchange of ideas. One reason for many to visit the drinktec is presumably the annually celebrated Munich Oktoberfest which will take place from September 22 to October 7. The allegedly greatest public festival in the world demonstrates every ...

Trade professionals in the sector will be coming to the New Munich Trade Fair Centre between 20 and 27 September 2001 to find out which new developments and trends will be shaping their industry in the years to come. Among the innovations and new developments on show at the fair are:

The Convenience Factor Consumers more than ever are looking for convenience to accommodate their active lifestyles, a trend that has led to a dramatic rise in NR PET containers because they are lighter, unbreakable and „one way“. While the plastic bottle has become ubiquitous in the non-alcoholic cold-fill beverage segments, such as soft drinks and water, brewers and hot-fill packers are increasingly looking to the packaging breakthrough of the ‘70s. But the transition poses various challenges for beverage producers, and industry suppliers are r ...

QUALITY CONTROL IN FRONT OF THE FILLER Softdrink-analysing system at Rosbacher Mineralbrunnen With beginning of the year 2000 the technical management at the Vereinte Mineral- und Heilquellen GmbH & Co. KG, location Rosbacher Brunnen, thought about the continuous recording and control of the measurement variables °Brix-, CO2-content and conductivity in front of the new installed PET-filler. Next to the quality assurance online control the financial damage of a possible production out of specification is here particularly large, because the PET-bottle can not be emptied and re-filled again (as for example a returnable bottle-system). he right partner was rapidly found in the Centec GmbH in Maintal, Germany and a test phase of the measuring system SDA 500 was arranged. It is a compact, modular built up unit and measures continuously and highly precise all required quality parameters of softdrinks directly in front of the filler. The measurement system has a hygienic construction and i ...

A TRUE FAIRYTALE Knjaz Milos, Yugoslavia's Number One Mineral Water Spring, Writes a Story of Success The story of Knjaz Milos sounds almost like a wonderful fairy tale. A brief rendition of the story: Once upon a time there was a prince who had an ailing horse that he was very fond of. One nice day as he was riding over the fields he noticed that his horse was thirsty so the prince named Milos stopped at a well. The horse drank from the well and shortly thereafter recovered. The prince was of course very pleased. Now that he was aware of the therapeutic effect of the legendary well, he bought the source from the farmer for two silver pistols. This very special water became the beverage of the court. So much for the fantastic but true tale of Knjaz Milos. The further development of the mineral water well continued as it began. Just as fantastic but at the same time equally as real.

The “royal quality” was discovered internationally as early as the beginning of the 20t ...

HIGH QUALITY Filtration as a Quality Assurance Technology in the Production of Beverages The standards placed on the quality of foods and beverages as well as their production process are constantly increasing. Various reports about foods and beverages in the media have sensitized consumers and have thus become factors that influence the consumer’s purchases. current example of compliance with the highest standards for hygiene is the introduction of filling in PET bottles. For the beverage industry and its suppliers, the arrival of PET bottles signifies both a new challenge and a new opportunity. The majority of soft drink manufacturers has invested in this technology and will probably continue to do so within the next few years. For filling beverages that are prone to spoilage, such as fruit juices, low-carbonated bottled mineral water, or ice tea drinks, manufacturers have already been installing aseptic systems with clean room technology. As a result, the beverage industry is sl ...

CLEAR BEERS, SOLID BEERS Realization of the chemical-physical stability The criteria according to which the consumer judges a beer, are taste, clarity, foam and colour. The increase of the world´s beer production and the requirements of the consumers demand a protection of these quality features for a period of up to one year. The biological stability of the beers is guaranteed by suitable cleansing and disinfection measurements, as well as by constant production controls in the breweries. The chemical – physical stability is measured by the time the beer keeps its appearance and its clarity. The chill haze is a very critical factor here. he chill haze arises during the cooling of the beer and is a consequence of the interaction between proteins and flavanoidphenols which, if necessary, form complexes. The chill haze dissolves as soon as the beer temperature is raised again since the formation of the complexes is a balance reaction between the proteins and the polyphenols. In the ...

HIGHER CONSUMPTION OF BEVERAGE CANS While a deposit on cans is disputed in Germany, the European Aluminium Organisation (EAA) has reported an increasing demand for beverage cans. The use of aluminium beverage cans in Europe increased by 4.9 per cent to 35.4 million units in the past year alone, EAA declared. At the same time, the recycling rate rose to 43 (previous year: 41) per cent. According to the statements, Great Britain is the country with the highest amount of recycled aluminium cans. In other countries which, as France, Italy and Spain, have better organized recycling systems, the recycling rate rises only slowly on the other hand. The association concludes that the value of aluminium waste alone promotes a „voluntary collection“ without special costs for the individual or the public.
