VARIABLE CRATE LABELLING A product change does not require the procurement of new beverage crates any longer The process generally used to apply corporate logos to beverage crates is screen printing. If the beverage producer wants to advertise his product effectively already via the crate imprint, he must purchase new crates every time he changes his product range. That is, however, not necessary: there is a variable crate labelling system for the trend towards an even greater product variety and towards offering seasonal products in the beverage industry. he trends in the beverage industry are becoming more and more ephemeral, new brands in the product range have to be presented effectively in order to get noticed by the end-consumer

FERMENTATION TANKS Modern red and white wine production Today´s wine drinkers demand fresh, fruity, sparkling and varietytypical wines with a rich bouquet. Due to the introduction of special steel fermentation and storage tanks to the wine cellar industry, producers succeeded in complying with the increasingly pretentious consumer behaviour. Non-porous surfaces, diffusion density and taste neutrality guarantee absolute hygiene, prevent oxidation and make it possible to give the wine the desired taste quite deliberately. Today, wine production is mainly carried out with mash plungers which imitate the method of dipping the marc cake by means of latest technological developments. With white wine, the so called cold fermentation contributes to an improvement of quality.

The red wine mash plunger automates the manual dipping of the marc cake.

DEAD-END ULTRA-FILTRATION Membrane technology for optimized hygiene and economical water treatment In the past years, it has become clear that drinking water deserves increasingly attention because it is a decisive and the most important raw material and auxiliary agent in terms of quantity for the beverage industry. Drinking water is remarkable for the hygienic and safety standards as well as for its costs. Membrane technologies can make significant contributions to both topics in water treatment in the beverage industry. The following two examples are to demonstrate the manifold applications: improvement of microbiological safety standards of water without the use of chemicals and reduction of costs for water softening/desalination. rinking water is microbiologically harmless – this was and is still true today to a large extent. However, again and again there are exemptions from this rule in the daily papers. This is also due to the emergence of new and partly pathogenic germs wh ...

CATALYSTS IN THE TANK The use of adjuncts needs the application of technical enzymes After the EU-wide harmonization of commercial beer guidelines, international beer types are starting to become increasingly well received especially by younger consumers – even in countries with a strong beer tradition. Adjuncts (unmalted grains) are used during the production of some of these beers, which is reflected in considerably lower production costs. This new market, which meanwhile reaches a significant turnover volume, is also interesting for brewers who, thus far, have used traditional production methods with malt as the only raw material in the grist. The usage of adjuncts during the brewing process makes the use of technical enzymes a necessity. y using malt as well as adjuncts in the mash, the enzyme activity of the raw materials is limited to the malt portion. The activity of the malt is sufficient to be able to process an amount of adjuncts (unmalted barley, rice, corn, millet, etc. ...

It is no coincidence that a reputation of being one of the best sites for producing exclusive fruit brandies is attached to this pleasant location. Günter Bimmerle, founder of the present day company group apparently felt exactly the same way back in the 1960s.

OUT OF EQUILIBRIUM For years, supply and demand have been out of equilibrium on the hop market. In the past ten years, overproduction and the resulting price decline have forced numerous hop growers out of business. “The market is fundamentally destroyed,” resumed Stephan Barth, chairman of the German Hop Industry Association, at the press conference following the BRAU Beviale 2002. The largest hop growing nations, Germany and the USA, have to see to it that they quickly find a solution and that they get the hop growers to implement the same in order to stop the decline. For years, German and US hop growers and hop industry associations have been appealing their members to reduce production considerably. After the 2001 hop harvest, 18 per cent of the total area were cleared, but even that is by far not sufficient enough. The instability of the market is furthermore promoted ...

BAN ON ALCOHOL ADVERTISING The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has not yet settled definitely the lawsuit concerning the question whether the broadcasting of sport events which have been recorded in a member country can be impeded or restricted according to the existing rules due to the advertising ban for alcoholic beverages existing in another member country. The Court of Justice refused a request by the British High Court to examine the compatibility of the French restrictions with the principle of free movement of services as inadmissible. The reason for the refusal to declare position is according to the Luxembourg judges the fact that the request by the British Court could put the same in a position to judge on the legitimacy of French legal requirements. The lawsuit originates from suits filed by Bacardi-Martini SAS and Cellier des Dauphins. Both alcoholic beverage producers sued a British advertising company for breach of contract and demanded da ...

(pz) BREWING AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY INTERNATIONAL: Mr. MacKinnon, during the past years the problem of over production has affected the hop market. What is the situation like after the hop harvest in 2002 in U.S.A. and worldwide Douglas MacKinnon: The situation in the hop market following the harvest of 2002 was worse than expected by anybody prior to harvest. Despite unprecedented acreage reduction by American hop growers of over 6500 acres (over 2600 hectares) American and world alpha acid production decreased only slightly. The market for alpha hops on the spot/free market in both Europe and America was approximately $0. ...
