ALUMINIUM USE REDUCED New Can End Provides Significant Cost Savings for Labatt Labatt Interbrew North America (London, Ontario), an internationally renowned brewer and one of Canada’s oldest companies, challenges itself to create innovative ways to enhance products, customer relationships and business results. In its quest to brew quality beers that consumers enjoy, Labatt pays special attention to the entire beer-making business, including manufacturing and packaging. Labatt’s commitment to innovation spurred the search for new technologies that could decrease material usage and improve operational efficiencies.

With the new can end, Labatt could reduce the aluminium usage dramatically.

UNIFORM BOTTLES FOR COCA-COLA PETWall Provides Quality Control and Process Control Too It’s always been a dilemma for soft drink bottlers who must run high-speed filling lines efficiently: how to assure that containers from one manufacturing plant are identical to those produced at another. For Coca-Cola in the USA, one solution is a unique inspection/process monitoring system from Agr*TopWave that’s been installed in the Bowling Green, Ohio (U.S.) plant of Southeastern Container, Inc.

S

outheastern Container is a seven-member cooperative that produces PET containers exclusively for Coca-Cola bottlers, and they have a very clear mission: to manufacture products that conform exactly to the shape, dimensions, and clarity standards that Coca-Cola specifies.

Absolut uniformity inquired The millions of 20-ounce, two-liter, and half-liter PET bottles that regularly leave the Bowling Green facility must be identical to those produced at other Southeas ...

CHALLENGES AHEAD FOR UK MICROBREWERIES Further Growth and Attracting Younger Drinkers is Difficult According to a recently published report by the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA), small brewers in the UK did well during the last two years. They enjoyed significant gains in output and reported an average annual increase of 13 per cent. Some 400 micro-breweries account for over 150 million pints or a current share of 1.5 per cent of the total UK beer market. Nevertheless, micro-breweries face difficulties in finding pubs to sell their beer and also in attracting young consumers.

In the early 1970s, there were only four brew-pubs left. Now there are 85.

CREATIVE IDEALISTS The 1516 Brewing Company – Perfect Example of the Austrian Restaurant and Brewpub Scene There is an interesting reaction to the prevalence of international brewing groups in Austria: A growing number of brewpubs and small breweries. Their output of hectolitres referring to the entire Austrian market amounts to about five per cent altogether. Horst Asanger, owner of the “1516 Brewing Company” in Vienna is one of those passionate brewers.

F

ischerbräu was the first Austrian microbrewery to be founded in Vienna 17 years ago. Meanwhile, there are 70 of these small enterprises throughout the country, 20 of which were newly founded in the past two years alone. Most of the owners have never passed a professional training as a brewer and are thus more unembarrassed, courageous and open-minded in their approach. Beer in all its variations is a passion for them, they are idealists, not to say “beer maniacs”. Horst Asanger who runs the “15 ...

ENHANCED QUALITY The Use of Oenological Enzymes in the Winemaking Process In the past years, oenological enzymes were increasingly used to enhance the quality of wines. Very positive results could be partly achieved with fully ripe grape harvests and with certain types of wine. Recent studies, however, have shown that the major part of the enzymatically released compounds could not be assigned to the group of the terpenes and that the compounds only show a weak aroma profile. Enzymatically triggered oxidation reactions can have negative effects on both the C13 norisoprenoide content as well as on the release of glycosidically bound, volatile phenols which, on the other hand, can impair the flavour of the wines.

A

t which stages of the winemaking process can oenological enzymes be used Oenological enzymes are used during the following different stages of the winemaking process: – Extraction of juices, flavours and colourings – Clarification of must – Enzy ...

WELD SEAMS AS A PROBLEM ZONE Endoscopical Control of Tubular Systems in Refrigerating Plants Increases Operational Reliability Irregularities of weld seams in the piping of a refrigerating plant can strongly jeopardize its proper operation. Appropriate processing and control by endoscopical examinations can prevent severe financial consequences or reduce the risk of operational defects respectively.

T

he pipework of refrigerating plants must come up to the most ambitious expectations. Working conditions take a lot more influence on corrosion stability than in other sectors thus affecting the working reliability and service life of the cooling system. Given the assembly of a refrigerating plant has been carried out properly, chemically and biologically corrosive processes which damage the tubing, as well as biological processes which impair the operation can be controlled and reduced to a minimum by suitable measures.

CREATIVE IDEALISTS … ... is the headline of an article of the present BBII issue which briefly and accurately describes the owners of brewpubs. These brewpub owners and small breweries are mainly dealt with in this edition. Their creativity as far as varietal frequency and unique recipes are concerned serves as a front and advertisement all over the world and the brewpubs of course need this trademark to disassociate themselves from the rest of the beer market thus protecting their slight chances to make profits which is the second crucial point: You often need a really good deal of idealism to preserve your passion for brewing and keep your tail up despite the trip-wires put up in the market environment against a marketing beyond your own brewhouse and pub as Ute Ballay demonstrates by means of the UK microbreweries. Altogether, an even increasing trend can be observed, not ...
