SPORT, FITNESS, ENERGY The Magic Triangle for more Growth The fitness wave is further booming, modern people are efficient and active around the clock. Naturally, this lifestyle requires tailor-made “fuel”. Sport and energy drinks have therefore been stimulating the market for non-alcoholic beverages for years. In view of the complexity of what is on offer, the question is what distinguishes an energy or sports drink. In the new generation of sport, fitness and energy drinks, the factors of positioning, fruit, colour, taste, added benefit and packaging can be accurately tailored to the respective customer needs.

O

nly a few decades ago, the only place sport was “in” was in front of the television, and “no sports” was the credo of many opinion leaders. Today, politicians, top managers, workers, pupils and pensioners run marathons together. This change of archetype is symptomatic for the whole society. The fitness wave has been booming, modern people ...

COMBINED STABILIZATION SYSTEM CSS – an Innovative Process in Beer Stabilization Until now, beers requiring extended shelf lives to survive long distribution channels have been predominantly stabilized by means of silica gel and PVPP. At the EBC-Congress in Dublin a new system has been presented which starts to establish itself as the method of choice: the Combined Stabilization System (CSS). A significant advantage of the CSS is its selective and gentle removal of haze forming tannins and proteins in a single step system.

ilica gel removes protein from the beer and PVPP reduces tannin levels. Both stabilization media can be dosed during diatomaceous earth (DE) filtration, but with the drawbacks that the capacity of the DE filter is adversely affected and considerable waste material of the stabilization media is produced. PVPP can also be dosed and regenerated in a separate dedicated ...

TWO-STAGE STRETCH BLOW FORMING Linear PET Stretch Blow Moulding Machines for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises The stretch blow moulding machines for the manufacturing of PET bottles from so called preforms have made their triumphant march through the bottling plants. So far, the big rotary machines had been used. These machines are perfectly suited for large-scale bottling plants which want to supply their fillers “inline” with plastic bottles. Which solutions, however, can be found for smaller and medium-sized well and bottling plants to produce PET bottles autonomously

T

he big rotary stretch-blow moulding machines are mostly not profitable for small and mediumsized enterprises which want to start their own production of PET bottles for the first time. With low and medium filler rates, linear stretch-blow moulding machines are rather appropriate for the production of the desired quantities.

SYSTEM SOLUTION WITH HIGH INTEGRATING CAPACITY Capacitive Measuring Method for Determining the Retention of Gas Volume in CO2 Storage Tanks There has been a clear OEM trend to provide more and more system solutions with a high integrating capacity and an equally high functionality in the future. The ulterior motive is to reduce the number of sub-contractors for one final product and to increase the capacity and attractiveness of the final product for the consumer. The following will present a new, highly integrative electronic measurement method for the continuous determination of gas volume retention in a CO2 storage tank which meets these new requirements.

QUALITY ASSURANCE IS TRUMP IT tools designed for increased transparency throughout all processes compared, eliminating virtually any form of error during order processing. 3. Consumers demand for safe products can only be met with standardized beverage production methods with well-documented processes. Data capture integrated into the entire business process forms the data basis for product safety. This is intensively supported by the integrated LIMS system. Archival of documents and audit documentation is also possible.

An all-inclusive quality management system is one of the basic requirements of a success-oriented beverage enterprise. ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) and LIMS (Laboratory Information System) are two significant tools: the integration of both IT tools in the areas purchasing, production, and inventory is an absolute necessity for reconstructable and transparent traceability of corporate processes and products.

PACKAGING HIGH-TECH One Endpackaging System for Non-returnable Glass and PET Bottles With its newly developed multipack optic, the Bitburger Brewery has the answer to what the consumer has been waiting for. They planned a new line to fill and package the trendy “Bit-Boxes”. The ambitious target: the new packaging should be on the shelves after a few months.

A new packaging design combined with filling and packaging high-tech: the reaction of the Bitburger Brewery to consumer buying trends.

F

or years the beer market has been hotly contested. At present, the non-refundable bottle sector is at the centre of competition for market share. New strategies are required because the consumer in this market segment tends increasingly to buy impulsively. An essential criteria in the purchase decision is thus the packaging design. The craving for a fresh cool premium beer must be triggered. The Bitburger Brewery reacted creatively and offensively to these ...

“THE GOLDEN TREE” AND “HALF A MAN” The last two microbreweries remaining in the Flemish city of Bruges There are only two of the formerly 50 breweries left in Bruges and its surroundings today, some of which were run by monasteries. One of them is called “de Gouden Boom – The Golden Tree”, the other goes by the name of “Huisbrouwerij de Halve Man – Home Brewery Half a Man”, a brewery which can be traced back to the year of 1487 and a family-owned enterprise since 1856. Both houses are related to ambitious catering.

“Bruges la mort”, the “Dead City” is a novel that was famous about 100 years ago, written by Georges Rodenbach who is by name related to Rodenbach Brewers in Roeselare, almost a large-scale enterprise with an output of 400000 hl of Flemish speciality beers. SCOTTISH BEER CULTURE Caledonian Brewery preserves traditional techniques The traditional beer culture in Scotland has experienced a renaissance during the last two decades. The foundation of numerous small breweries thus also provided for the return of the “Cask Ales” to the pubs. The Caledonian Brewery, however, which still brews traditionally and in accordance with a system of a “Gravity Feed Brewery” can look back on a history of 134 years. “The Caledonian Brewery is one of the two surviving breweries from the century before last” sales manager and “Cask Ale Trainer” Alan MacBurnie who very enthusiastically shows visitors his company, proudly tells us. The brewery was founded in the year of 1869. At that time, Edinborough was one of the largest brewing centres of Europe, there were more than 40 independent breweries existing. The flourishing export trade formed an important support for the breweries. When the exports lost in importance, many breweries got into fin ...

ALLIED INDUSTRIES TEMPERATURERESISTANT CLOSURE SEALING SYSTEM Alcoa Closure Systems International (CSI) Europe (UK), closure systems suppliers for the beverage industry, has developed a sealing system that ensures carbonated beverages in PET bottles remain fresh – even when the heat is on. Therefore Alcoa has modified the saling profile on the plastic screw closures Euro-Lok and Double-Lok with a high temperature liner profile. A plug side-seal concept performs two liner functions simultaneously, thanks to its highly effective outer seal and additional inner seal. Furthermore, the sealing ring positioned inside the neck of the bottle helps resist against shrinkage of the PET, because this inner seal remains in constant contact with the neck of the bottle, even if the latter shrinks or loses its shape under high temperatures. This results in improved CO2 retention.

The fact that the simultaneous interpreting had been red-pencilled for the first time could be thoroughly managed since most of the lecturers had a polyglot knowledge of languages. The organisation of a sub-contractor exhibition to provide additional financial resources was greatly appreciated by both the participants and the industry. One of the main features of the congress, the exchange of information, was in any case positively supported. Moreover, the proficiency of the EBC was honoured by the fact that the Royal Dublin Showground had been made available as a location which as well ideal ...

U.S. hop industry The 2003 sold ahead position for the U.S. hop industry is much lower than that of previous years despite the fact that the percentage of the crop sold ahead is up from 2002, so the report of Hop Growers of America. With little market activity since the harvest, many growers will not likely be surprised by the news. The sold ahead survey calculates a percentage sold for 2003 based on the 2002 production. There will likely be some acreage reduction in 2003. This will cause the actual percent sold ahead to be slightly higher than that reported.

COMPETITION INTENSIFIES IN GLOBAL DRINKS MARKETS C

Soft drinks are making the running in the top three regional markets. The North American region has the highest rate of beverage consumption in the world at 597 litres. Soft drinks there now account for more than half of overall sales, having gained at the expense of hot drinks in particular, with packaged water contributing the lion’s share of the volume increase. Australasian soft drinks now amount to just over a third of the region’s beverage sales, overtaking hot drinks as the leading sector. Nearly half the incremental volume growth over the period from 1997 to 2002 is due to carbonates, with packaged water contributing a further 37 per cent.
