STILL LOTS TO LEARN 8 th Global Bottled Water Congress in Rio de Janeiro Bottled water is and remains the world’s most important commercial drink. This was the key message to the participants of the 8 th Global Bottled Water Congress in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The city beneath the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado Hill was a good choice, because the Brazilian mineral water market has been booming recently. However, that same market is also facing major regulatory challenges.

More than 200 delegates from Brazil, the rest of South America, and other countries attended the Mineral Water Congress 2011 in Rio.

is in preparation; and an electronic production control system (Sicobe) is to be introduced shortly, which will effectively create an automated record system for tax returns (Selo Fiscal).

here are many reasons why the British consulting company Zenith International and the Association of Brazilian Mineral Water Manufacturers (AB ...

A MARKET TO WATCH FOR The Indian spirits industry Spirits sales in India at 235 million cases looks meagre, especially when one considers that the country has a population of 1.2 billion. But the spirits industry, often called “No alcohol, please, we are Indians” country, has been growing at an explosive rate for the past decade. The Indian liquor market is forecast to grow into the world’s second largest by 2013 behind China, pushing Russia to third spot. Russia’s liquor market, the second largest, declined 0.4 per cent to 274.6 million cases in 2010. It is expected to reach 355 million cases by 2015. Blended Scotch whisky, single malt Scotch whisky, and vodka, which have been laggards in the growth, are expected to exhibit strong volume growth. ell-known global names like Smirnoff, Bacardi, Johnnie Walker, and Absolut, collectively added less than 3 million cases during the year across the globe, but Indian producers have been adding a huge capacity on year on year basis. A SUCCESSFUL ANNIVERSARY The 50 th edition of the Brau Beviale attracted more than 31,500 visitors to Nuremberg A total of 31,693 visitors and 1,384 exhibitors attended the 2011 anniversary edition of the Brau Beviale, which took place between November 9 and 11 at the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg. Even 50 years after the first event – which was then a simple training course organised by the Association of Private Breweries of Bavaria – the show is still a powerful platform for the introduction of innovations and a popular venue for the international beverage industry to gather. (gb)

he trade show’s image has undergone considerable changes during the past half century. What started out as a mere training course for brewers wanting to stay current with developments in their profession, has since evolved into one of the most important trade shows, not just for the German beverage industry, but for the international industry as well. The Brau Beviale can now boast some 3 ...

GUEDILA, A ROSE AT THE DOOR TO THE DESERT Algerian water producer has invested in a new bottling line The Guedila brand is not new on the market. The spring, discovered in 1986, was first managed, like the rest of the market, by a state monopoly. It was only when the spring was privatised and taken over by the Hoggui family in 2003 that the real Guedila saga began. Now the Algerian water producer has invested in a new bottling line to package its water into a very identifiable bottle.

HOW TO BRING VALUE TO THE COMPANY The use of scheduling Planning and scheduling requires craftsmanship. Just like the brew master, who can smell if processes are running well, the head planner can make efficient schedules based on his long experience. He knows the work in process and the available capacity by heart. Previously the brew master was challenged to improve efficiency after which process control systems have optimised most of the production processes. Now its turn to the planner who is faced with management demands to continuously improve the supply chain. o retain competitive advantage, assets must be used more efficient and the responsiveness must be increased without giving in the high standards for quality and safety. IT support becomes a necessity for the planner to achieve this goal. Besides that the management does not like a single point of failure with all planning expertise concentrated on one person.

RELIABLE AND PERSISTENT The aim of prefiltration for water bottling plants To achieve the maximum degree of efficiency for a bottling line, it is absolutely necessary that the last filtration step prior to bottling is equipped with a highperformance filtration line. Water filtration is carried out in the final production step prior to bottling to ensure that the beverages are available free from particles and harmful microorganisms. In most applications, this filter line comprises a prefilter and a subsequent membrane filter.

he bottling line frequently works 24 hours per day in multiple shifts. In this highperformance operation, malfunction periods must be excluded as these are otherwise highly costly. The filter cartridges used in the filtration line must achieve service lives long enough that production downtimes do not occur due to filter cartridge blockages.

BIG, STRONG, SUPERLATIVE … AMERICAN! The 2011 Great American Beer Festival This year’s Great American Beer Festival (GABF), held September 29 through October 1, was a milestone – the event’s 30 th anniversary! Every year in the fall, beer enthusiasts from all over the United States and indeed the world, flock to the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado, for the annual ritual. he first GABF was a small, almost intimate affair, held in 1982, when a mere 450 people came to taste just 48 beers served by 24 breweries in a space of some 465 m2. This year, the event welcomed more than 49,000 people, who each paid USD 60 (approximately 45 Euro) to attend one of four four-and-a-half hour sessions. To accommodate the crowds, the 2011 event covered almost 28,000 m2! There were three evening sessions for the general public, plus one afternoon session on the last day reserved just for members of the Brewers Association and the American Homebrewers Association.

ADHESIVE SYSTEMS Environmentally friendly labelling There is no field in industry today, where producers do not try to make high-quality products at both the lowest possible cost and the least environmental impact. This applies, of course, also to the brewing industry. Saving resources and energy are topics that every brewery is confronted with every day; and there is hardly a process step in the brewery where savings are not possible. Of special significance in this context is the packaging area, where enormous savings can be realised in both production and transportation costs by reducing the amount and weight of raw materials and by implementing reuse and recycling strategies. Because labelling is an important part of any packaging operation, it is also one of the areas where environmental issues are becoming ever more important. abels are an important aspect of a brand’s image. The bottle labelling process, therefore, has been under continuous development for decades to meet th ...

EXPANSION IN A TIME OF RECESSION The new growth of American craft breweries Craft breweries in the United States are growing these days faster than an active yeast culture in unfermented wort. With over 11 per cent industry growth last year, according to the Brewers Association of Boulder, Colorado, new breweries and brewpubs are popping up nationwide almost every week now, although most of them are quite small. But the real news in this wave of new growth may actually be that the “old ones” are getting bigger – considerably bigger. lysian Brewing Company, which has three locations in Seattle, produced about 5,500 barrels last year at its main Capitol Hill location (the company operates two other smaller breweries, Tangletown and Elysian Fields). This summer, they expect to start brewing at a new production location in Seattle’s Georgetown District, a plant with an initial capacity of 60,000 barrels – and the space to add 60,000 more.

COOPERATION AMONG TRADE SHOWS: WE LIKE IT! Even in the age of digital media, the good old trade show concept is still viable. This is because, in business, nothing can replace face-to-face communication. The Brau Beviale in Nuremberg is the most recent case in point. You can find our analysis of the trade show – including many photos – starting on page 18. We also hope you enjoyed our new booth! Above all, we are positively impressed by the fact that the world’s two largest trade shows in our industry found a way to cooperate: PETpoint, which has been an exclusive drinktec feature, has also become a feature at the Brau Beviale; and the European Beer Star, which was previously just awarded at the Brau Beviale, will also become part of the drinktec in Munich, starting in 2013. In our view, such cooperation makes plenty of sense and will benefit visitors. Therefore, we like it! The i ...

AN INTEGRAL COMPONENT OF THE MARKETING MIX U.S. breweries develop Facebook concepts Anheuser-Busch InBev and MillerCoors, the two leading American brewing groups, bank key elements of their new media strategies on developing their own concepts and content for Facebook, which means they no longer consider social networks as mere extensions of and an additional platform for classic campaigns. Starting in the summer of 2010, the two groups have come out with a host of interesting and future-oriented projects. he two large American brewing groups Anheuser-Busch InBev and MillerCoors seemed unimpressed by the initial hype surrounding the emergence of social networks. Only with great hesitation have such high-volume brands as Bud Light or Miller Lite entered the new media fray. At the beginning, the material that appeared on their Facebook pages was basically what was already available: Spots and promotions or contests that had been developed for traditional media such as TV and print, for ...

BEVERAGE INNOVATIONS “MELCHIOR” IN BIG SIZE WINE BOTTLE A unique collection of highly rare ‘Melchiors’ is being offered by The Antique Wine Company, just in time for the festive season. The name ‘Melchior’ refers to one of the three wise men bearing gifts in biblical times and in the wine world it is used to define the biggest size bottle of all – holding a staggering 18 litres each, or 24 bottles in one.

Exceptionally rare, this unique group of five bottles, known as the Colgin Cellars Collection, is one of only two sets ever produced. The other set is held in great esteem in Colgin’s vintage library. The collection is from the renowned Herb Lamb Vineyard and is one of Napa Valley’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Its strictly limited production coupled with restricted availability through a members-only mailing list, makes the wine highly desirable and therefore a very exciting offering.

Increasing global beer market The international beer market staged something of a recovery in 2010 with global beer consumption growth of 2.4 per cent. The Asian beer market grew by 6 per cent last year to reach 650 mhl, and now accounts for over a third of global beer consumption. Africa, on the other hand, despite making up just over 5 per cent of the global beer market, performed very strongly, registering an 8 per cent growth in volume in 2010. Latin America also witnessed positive growth of over 3 per cent. In contrast, European beer volumes declined by just over 1 per cent in Eastern and Central Europe, and by almost 2 per cent in Western Europe. Volumes in North America fell by just over ...
