BREWING AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY INTERNATIONAL

IS “CRAFT” LOSING ITS “INNOCENCE” The world’s brewing giants are getting nervous! This includes even the biggest among them, AB-InBev (AB), which had to stomach a stunning volume loss of 9 % in the Light American Lager segment in the past decade. AB is fully aware that the dynamic craft brew segment had something to do with this development. As a pragmatic enterprise, AB has obviously recognized the trend, and it has responded appropriately. Along the lines of “If you can’t lick them, join them,” it began to buy up one craft brewery after another, first almost on the sly, but now ever more openly. The list of acquisitions is already long. First, there were AB investments in Redhook, Widmer, Kona, Fordham, and Old Dominion. Then came the 100 % acquisitions of such renowned craft breweries as Goose Island, in Chicago, Blue Point, on Long Island, and the 10 Barrel Brewing Company, in Oregon. AB’s strategic approac ...

The proposal from the Attorney General’s Office, first filed in 2009, amounts to a modification of the 1996 act containing implementation provisions for Article 220 of the Brazilian constitution. The court had rejected the proposal in the first instance. The brewing and beverage industry will probably appeal to the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STJ) against the proposal. BROOKLYN BREWERY, NEW YORK Planning and designing a unique craft brewery The chances are high that you have heard or even tried the beers of Brooklyn Brewery. From its humble beginning in 1988 it took the brewery 22 years to get to 100,000 sold barrels per year, but after this only three years were needed to break the annual production mark of 200,000 barrels. Currently Brooklyn Brewery is producing 260,000 barrels and its famous beers are to be found in restaurants, bars, and retailers across 26 U.S. states and in 20 countries. The stellar growth of this craft brewing pioneer is based on the dedication of its founders to brew the best beer possible, on consumers giving preference to craft beers over existing main stream brands, on its commitment to the Brooklyn neighborhood, the rejuvenation of Brooklyn, and also on the rise of social media and using this media to its fullest potential.

Since its beginning, Brooklyn Brewery has brewed full flavor beers that enrich the qu ...

CRAFT BEER FROM THE DESERT The Deschutes Brewery is a top address in the USA Deschutes, now one of the most successful breweries in America, was founded in the small desert town of Bend, which has experienced an amazing boom over the past few years. As a young man Gary worked as a waiter, first just for pocket money and later making a living from it for some time. HORST DORNBUSCH REPORTS FROM THE USA

If you can’t lick them, buy them In the last week of January, the US beer world received a shock message: Anheuser-Busch had acquired Elysian Brewing Company, a venerable, even hallowed craft beer maker in Seattle, Washington State ! The transaction was for an undisclosed sum. Elysian was founded in 1996 and had since become one of the cult craft breweries on the West Coast, having won dozens of awards and enjoying spectacular annual growth rates. The motto on the label of one of its flagship beers, the Loser Pale Ale, reads “Corporate Beer Still Sucks.” Elysian was one of the incarnations extraordinaire of the artisanal ethos of the American craft brew movement!

Anheuser-Busch’s “war” strategies on “craft” In the 90s of the last century, Anheuser-Busch (AB) practiced the now infamous strategy of “100 percent share of mind.” Specifically, the brewing giant would exert pressure on its wholesalers by vario ...

ALLIED INDUSTRIES BÜRKERT PRESENTS VALVES FOR HIGH AND LOW TEMPERATURES The core of the new solenoid valve from Bürkert is a metal bellows of durable stainless steel, which thermally decouples the coil from the valve body. This design prevents both condensation and overheating of the coil.

In addition, the welded metal bellows system provides high gas tightness. Another standard feature of the type 2610 valve is the power-reducing “Kick & Drop” elec-

tronics. The high starting power of 72 W required for opening of the valve is generated by overexcitation of the coil. Immediately (400 ms) after the valve has switched, the power consumption is electronically reduced to the substantially lower holding power of 4 W. The broad temperature spectrum from - 200 °C to +180 °C makes this valve type ideal for use in extreme temperature ranges, such as in cryogenic applications. Even at temperatures down to - 200 °C the thermal decoupling prevents freezing up of ...
