BREWING AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY INTERNATIONAL

DISCOVERING AND CONQUERING MARKET NICHES Those who complain that all the world’s markets are already saturated, better read the three reports about international trade shows in this issue! The latest newcomer, filling a market niche, is the Bevtec Asia in Bangkok (p. 42). Apart from the China Brew and China Beverage, there have been no international trade shows for the brewing and beverage industry in Southeast Asia. Instead, the industry had to rely, for instance, on such shows as the ProPak Asia in Bangkok. The situation was similar in Brazil, where the Brasil Brau (p. 12) has been counting thus far on a moderate turnout of exhibitors and visitors. There, too, beverage manufacturers who wanted to meet major suppliers had to rely on such trade shows as the Fispal in São Paulo for the packaging industry. What both trade shows have in common is that they operate in regionally underserved market niches, but have not been able t ...

WORLD NEWS EUROPE

UK cuts beer taxes The Brewers of Europe welcome the announcement by British Chancellor George Osborne that beer taxes will be cut for the third year running. Commenting on the impact the latest tax cut is set to have on the UK economy, Brigid Simmonds, Chief Executive of the British Beer & Pub Association, stated: “It will boost employment by 3,800 this year alone and attract new capital investment. It will put 180 million pounds in the pockets of beer drinkers and pubgoers. That is a huge difference.” The abolition of the so-called “beer duty escalator” (a previous system whereby beer tax was increased above inflation year on year) and a beer tax cut in 2013 and 2014 had already secured 16,000 jobs. What this latest announcement shows to other EU governments is that a water-tight case can be made for beer tax cuts as a means of stimulating investment, growth, jobs, and ultimately new tax revenues for the government, too. Beer generates over two ...

GLOBAL BEVERAGE PACKAGING Packaging is a major topic in the beverage world and includes much more than just the storage aspect. Iconic packaging examples like the famous Coca-Cola glass bottle are globally known and recognizable. While this is an example for a global phenomenon, cultural and regional differences in the packaging landscape are quite noteworthy. Further influences are economical and legal conditions in different parts of the world. For beverage producers, especially those who operate worldwide, the key to success is to know these influences and balance them to fulfill consumers’ needs.

The state of beverage packaging – pack materials and types

Pack material shares global beverages 2014*)

Rigid plastics are the predominant pack material in beverage packaging*) and have been for a while; however, their growth rates exceed those of other materials. This is mainly due to the worldwide success of PET ...

In 2008, for instance, this company was faced with investment decisions in its bottling area. The challenge was to replace the disinfectants, as well as the hot-water cycle, that were then part of the CIP process of the bottle washer. Eventually, the management settled on an Aquadron water treatment system as a solution. This system relies on anolyte as a cold sterilization agent. The Aquadron system selected by Bad Imnauer Mineralquellen is made by Innowatech GmbH. BOTTLE LABELING Essential paper properties for high-speed bottling processes The label is an advertisement placed directly onto the product. This calls for optimum printing results and precision work at the highest level even during high-speed labeling processes. This makes tough demands on all components involved. John Tucker, commercial managing director at Metsä Board Zanders, explains the crucial properties of the perfect label paper. he label is possibly the most important form of advertising in existence. This is because many consumers do not make their decision to buy until they have arrived at the point of sale. Consumers base their decision to a large extent on a label’s appearance. In addition to design issues, perfect appearance also depends on excellent printing and accurate labeling results. So the optimum label paper has to fulfill all the requirements of both processes.

It is now more than ten years since Doemens and the biotechnology company Roche Diagnostics GmbH, located in Penzberg, Germany, started to cooperate in training professionals in the field of biotechnology. This cooperation will now be expanded. Doemens will not only continue to support the part-time training of workers to become chemical technicians, it will also support the in-house training of Roche laboratory technicians. Upon completion, participants will receive an IHK-certificate (a German Chamber of Commerce certification of competence).

After the completion of an intensive technology training program, we offer our international students the opportunity to get to know Europe and its brewing traditions during a two-week field trip every spring.
