US overtakes Thailand as world leader in energy drinks The global energy drinks market advanced 17 per cent in 2006 to 3,431 million litres, according to the latest report by global drinks consultancy Zenith International. Thailand, home to the energy drinks concept, still leads in consumption per person, but the United States now has the highest total volume sales, driven by its top five brands – Red Bull, Monster, Rockstar, Full Throttle and SoBe No Fear.

S consumers drank 990 million litres of energy drinks in 2006, 47 per cent more than in 2005 and 200 million litres more than their Thai counterparts. “If the level of activity and product development in the US continues, it could represent 45 per cent of worldwide volume in five years,” commented Zenith Research Director Gary Roethenbaugh. “We also expect to see double digit growth in East Europe and the Middle East, with Latin America, Australasia and West Europe making good ...

THE TIME OF THE BEER WORLD MONOPOLY IS OVER Summary of the global beer market development Two years after the presentation of the Beer World Monopoly on the occasion of the WORLD BEER & DRINKS FORUM on September 10th 2005, a review seemed appropriate to me. My analyses and forecasts were based on a study which had been carried out under the patronage of Sabine Urban, professor at the university in Strasbourg, in which I had also participated. At that time I had examined the development of the approach of companies in Europe, with a particular focus on companies of the brewing industry. They were additionally based on the Barth Hansmaennel Report “The Leaders and their Challengers in the Top 40 Countries”, which has been published annually since 2000.

IMPROVED SHELF LIFE AND QUALITY O2-Measurements for the brewing industry We know that improper amounts of oxygen present in various stages of the brewing process will greatly affect the final taste. Accurate oxygen analysis allows the brewer to control the process so that the shelf life of beer can greatly be extended. A brief review of where to measure oxygen is provided in this article, followed by some helpful information on how to best make oxygen measurements in-line, in-package and whilst using portable analysers. Finally, some technical details are provided explaining the benefits of using electrochemical sensors for oxygen measurements. Understanding of the importance of oxygen measurements at each step of the brewing process and how to best apply various solutions for making measurements will lead to improved oxygen measurements in the brewery. xygen is of interest to the brewer for at least three reasons. Firstly, the character of beer (clarity, colour, odour and taste) is ...

INDIAN-GERMAN COLLABORATION Success of the first „drink technology + PET India“ At present India’s brewing and beverage industry is looked upon as an exciting market, and regarding the future, it’s becoming more and more popular. Therefore it seems recommendable to consequently transfer more know-how on-site. The “drink technology + PET India”, a mixture of fair and congress, which was held 29. – 30. Nov. 2007 in Bombay, emerged as an avid platform for exactly this purpose. After two days of comprehensive conventions many of the participants and organisers agreed that the event had been very successful. ince most of the hosts were from Germany, the commitment of German companies was noticeably high. There was even a German pavilion for fundamental discussions. The main goal was to intensify the Indian-German collaboration.

BUCANERO HOLGUIN Exciting Joint Venture between InBev and the Cuban state Cubas beer production amounts to approximately 2.4 m hectolitres per year which corresponds with an annual per capita consumption of about 20 litres related to a total population of about 12 m. This is very little compared with other countries’ rates, however, it can be explained by the purchasing power of the Cuban population which is not very high at present. For the long term however, the Cuban beer market deserves some attention since the island’s population is excellently qualified and very efficient in business which, as can be supposed, will lead to a positive economic development provided that it is embedded in an appropriate public policy context. Our editorial team met with the Bucanero brewery management in Havana and visited the production site in Holguin. This is an exciting story, all the more because InBev, the world’s largest brewery group and the Cuban state have got together in a Joint V ...

BREWING AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY INTERNATIONAL

Verlagssitz Schloss Mindelburg

NEW PLAYERS FOR THE BEER WORLD MONOPOLY The brewing world has significantly changed over the last few years. Less than a decade ago, companies like InBev or SAB Miller were still to be created. Just recently, the game of concentration has gone one step further: Heineken and Carlsberg in a joint venture bought Scottish & Newcastle. Anyone surprised by that I don’t think so. It is just a logical continuation of what happened in the past. The only question remaining is: What will happen in the future At the beginning of February, the American newspaper Wall Street Journal published speculations about a possible merger between InBev and Anheuser Busch. And there are further rumours about Heineken and Efes. With all these changes it is difficult to keep track of the current situation. On the pages 12 to 20 of this issue of BREWING AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY INTERNATIONAL, Germain Hansmaennel, a ...

Georg Schneider takes over office as president of Doemens e. V. Dear friends and supporters of Doemens! Because of the retirement of the hitherto Doemens chairmanship, a new one had to be elected. At the annual general meeting in Planegg you placed confidence in me and my colleagues in the chairmanship and elected us as new chairmanship. My objective will be to justify this confidence and to lead Doemens into a successful future. I am looking forward to an active assistance of the whole chairmanship and the board of trustees which is going to include many friends and supporters of Doemens and also to the support of the executive board and the Doemens staff. My great wish for the next years will be that all association members will again get involved with the association and make use of the manifold offers provided by Doemens. The whole brewing and beverage industry and also Doemens itself will benefit from this commitment for Doemens. Leading Doemens into a successful future is certa ...
