Eastern Europe Bottled Water market passes 5 billion euros Bottled water sales in East Europe have increased by more than 10 per cent in 2007 to 13.2 billion litres, according to the latest report from global drinks consultancy Zenith International. The market’s value rose an even faster 17 per cent to 5 billion euros, to nearly twice the level of 2 000. Continued growth is expected, as many countries still have consumption rates well below West Europe. „Countries with the lowest uptake include Russia, Belarus and Ukraine,“ commented Zenith Market Intelligence Director Gary Roethenbaugh. „This represents an attractive opportunity for new market entrants as well as existing players“ Other characteristics of the region that reinforce this growth potential are generally strengthening economic conditions and falling unemployment, leading to higher disposable incomes. There has also been greater recent investment in modernising operations and i ...

POLYPHENOLS, THE INTERFACE BETWEEN BEER AND WINE 13th Chair Jean de Clerck meeting in Belgium Approximately 130 participants from 14 countries, mostly from the scientific community, assembled at the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve/Belgium (UCL) from September 8 to 10 for the 13th Chair Jean de Clerck Meeting. Professor Collin of UCL, the organizer of the event, opened the proceedings by stressing that beer and wine can be studied in parallel, in part because both contain polyphenols.

rof. Guy Derdelinckx, of UCL, characterized polyphenols as a dilemma for the brewer, because, as the molecular weight of polyphenols increases, so does its reducing power as well as its tendency to cause turbidity in beer. Throughout the conference, experts in both beer and wine fermentation gave parallel presentations about “their” polyphenols. In the process, many similarities between beer and wine became obvious. Wine, however, was able to gain a slight advantage over beer in t ...

OPERATING COSTS ORIENTED DESIGN PepsiCo Germany: new system for product water processing In 2003, the high service life of the existing water treatment plants as well as rising requirements to product water quality and quantity led PepsiCo Germany to the basic decision to replace the present water treatment. The installed ion exchange technology thus should be replaced by a modern and safe system according to stateoftheart technology. At the same time, the system should meet the internal design, hygiene and quality standards of PepsiCo Germany and guarantee fully automatic operation. igh productivity, availability, sensoric requirements to the product as well as low operating costs were further important criteria in the planning phase. Particular requirements were made to the automated regulation of relevant water ingredients which influence the product quality. This particularly concerned

BREWING AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY INTERNATIONAL

SUSTAINABILITY, NOT JUST QUARTERLY PROFITS In November 2008, representatives of the sector came together at the BRAU BEVIALE in Nuremberg with more mixed feelings than usual: As was expected, exhibitors kept their greatest innovations in reserve for the drinktec 2009. But this year, one could also feel a great nervousness about how the international financial crisis might affect the sector. Not surprisingly, this topic was discussed at length at the trade fair. Fortunately, however, the great horror scenario did not materialize. It is true that many companies reported first warning signs from their customers, but all challenges seem to have been resolved in a calm and professional manner. Because most companies still have plenty of back orders on their books, there is sufficient time in the current crisis to negotiate future adjustments cost-effectively and on schedule. European companies – not only in the beverage sector – ...

Buy-Outs, “Stealth” Brews, and Beer-Mix Beverages: American Mega-Breweries’ Strategies for the High-End Market Sales of American industrial beer have been fairly stagnant over the past decade. In some years, they even declined slightly. At the same time, craft and import beers have experienced steady growth rates – in some years even 12 per cent or more! The “Big Three” – Anheuser-Busch (A-B), SABMiller (SAB), and Molson-Coors (M-C) – have responded to this shift in market forces in slightly different ways. Initially, M-C and especially SAB publically claimed no to worry about it, while A-B blatantly tried to suppress it, when it tightened its grip on the U.S. market in the 1990s by offering its distributors financial incentives to drop rival brands from their portfolios. That campaign became known as „100 per cent Share of Mind.“ To some extent, however, the Big Three also c ...

Shelf-ready packaging for efficiency The use of retail ready packaging offers opportunities for optimizing the supply chain. The greatest potential for savings is realized in store, where the goods and the tray can be placed on the shelf in one movement. Efficient retail ready packaging can be opened easily and without using a knife, offers a high shelf impact and is easily disposed of following a sale. However, it is not only retail that benefits from the switch to shelf-ready packaging: attractive presentation improves brand profiling and leads to a rise in sales. At the same time, the use of shelf-ready packaging closes gaps on the shelf and reduces out-of-stock rates as a consequence. The consumer also appreciates the simplified orientation and higher level of availability of the goods. The growing requirements for shelf-ready packaging are also leading to higher costs for packaging material. Subsequently, the utilisation of shelf-ready packaging requires carefully planned concep ...

Dear readers, During the rotative annual general meeting 2008 of the Bund der Doemensianer (BdD) I was unanimously elected president of the BdD by the meeting of members after having been vice president before. This confidence is a very particular honour for me, because it shows that the new orientation of the Doemens chairmanship gains respective recognition also among the members of the Bund der Doemensianer. Independent of this new function, I will furthermore carry out my function as treasurer of Doemens e. V. for which I have been responsible since 2007. In my opinion, two positive aspects result from this association specific personal union. One aspect is that the Doemens Academy and its graduates will approach, because now it will to some extent be possible for me in the personal union to accompany on the one hand the interests of the Doemens teaching staff and the active Doemens students and on the other hand the interests of the graduates of the Doemens Academy equally. Bottled Water Market Stalls West European bottled water consumption slipped back by 0.3% to 46.2 billion litres in 2007, according to the new 2008 West Europe Bottled Water report from leading drinks consultancy Zenith International. “2007 was a difficult year, as sales were adversely affected by challenging weather conditions in Northern Europe and a tightening of household expenditure,” commented Zenith Market Intelligence Director Gary Roethenbaugh. Still waters continued to gain ground on sparkling waters, following a long term trend. The penetration of still water is highest in Greece, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom and Ireland with market shares of at least 85%. In contrast, sparkling water is more popular than still water in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Sweden. Zenith forecasts that total bottled water consumption will resume growth to rise by a further 11% and reach 51 billion litres by 2012.
