REDUCTION UP TO 40 PERCENT Energy costs for compressed air Institute for Systems Engineering and Innovation Research (ISI) reveal, that up to 40% of the energy used for generating compressed air, is wasted. High quality compressed air is today an essential element of the brewing process and it is also an important cost constituent in the operation of every brewery -big and small. This report will elaborate on the enormous energy and cost savings that can be brought about by an appropriate selection of compressors and their installation, specific to the brewing process.

Avoiding No-Load Operation The energy requirements of a compressor depend on the volumetric flow and its operating pressure. Selection of compressors that would exactly meet the air demand would be the ideal situation. This is however not so simple, because in the Brewing process, the demand of air changes from moment to moment, depending on the stage of fermentation. To enable the best selection of compres ...

MARRYING TRADITION AND INNOVATION Procomac aseptic solutions

Procomac Spa, based in Sala Baganza (Parma) is renowned for its aseptic filling lines. Procomac began by manufacturing rinsers and conveyors. Successively, the company began developing innovative solutions and turnkey plants. The secret behind its success is the careful attention that Procomac pays to the customer requirements. Procomac’s philosophy can be summarised in two words: Reliability and flexibility. "BREWING AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY INTERNATIONAL” interviewed Mr. Carlo Ferrari, Group Media manager of the company, about the company’s innovative technology and their future prospective. BBII: Could you please present the company and tell us more about its history and how the company has developed Carlo Ferrari: The company Procomac was established in 1979 on the initiative of few technicians with vast experience in the sector. DEVELOPMENT THROUGH INNOVATION Optimized plant engineering for Coca-Cola Mexico Mexico is soft drink country. Mexicans consume an average of 198 liters of soft drinks annually. Mexico thus ranks second in soft drink consumption worldwide. And why are Mexicans of all people so very fond of soft drinks One reason is the distribution network of the soft drink industry that consistently supplies beverages to people throughout Mexico, even to the far corners of the country. Another reason is that Mexicans value not only the high nutritional content but also the outstanding quality and the variety of flavors of soft drinks. In the Mexican market today, soft drinks enjoy popularity similar to tortillas and are considered basic food. oft drink growth rates are no longer as unrestrained since mineral water was also ”brought into play” in the Mexican market approximately ten years ago. Nevertheless, the rate of increase is still almost three to five percent annually. In a country such as M ...

CONVENIENCE The packaging of the future is active and intelligent The features of convenience packaging are as numerous as they are different: They are lightweight and hence portable, are easily opened without the aid of tools - but are also resealable – carry a security label, and hence also offer a guarantee of authenticity. Pre-packed ready meals can be reheated or cooked in the microwave or oven, and the packaging is generally recyclable or offers a second benefit. The packaging size provides a specified number of portions, and the fillings have a long shelf life. Under the term 'convenience', these packaging specifications have long since become standard among filling plants in the United States. In most cases, American consumers have come to expect these types of product benefits. Today's filling plants must further enhance such packaging benefits if they are to retain a competitive edge in the consumer market. Consequently, the available options are now being expanded to inc ...

INSULATION TECHNOLOGY Boiler insulation technology squeezes out every last advantage Most steam and hot water boilers are often in use for over 8000 hours a year, and during this time they emit heat into the surrounding atmosphere, depending on the technology they use. These losses from radiation and conduction are the same at every load level. However, they differ completely for each manufacturer, depending on the design, the number and form of thermal bridges and the insulation technology applied. oos designs, which have been tried and tested for decades, use the best possible thermal technology and have a far better surface/performance ratio than other designs because of the heating gas conduits and the geometry and layout of the furnace and convection heating surfaces. In spite of these excellent basic

foundations for keeping radiation losses low, Loos has also made use of further opportunities to minimise losses.

THERE’S BEER IN GREENLAND AS WELL Nuuk Imeq opting for the returnable system Greenland, the world’s largest island, is, like the entire Arctic, a myth, a Holy Grail, the destination of innumerable expeditions, whose participants were seeking not only scientific findings, but often philosophical insights as well. The eternal ice is a lure and a challenge. Greenland is not only an ice barrier between Europe and America. It was no accident that Erik the Red gave the new country the auspicious name of "Greenland". In the south, sheep are kept on lush meadows and pastures, and there’s even a bit of crop farming, and some bravely persevering trees. And Greenland is not only the land of sled dogs, the endless white and the silence, but also of colours: grey granite, shiny pink-red meadow-roses, yellow buttercups, red sunsets, white glaciers and shimmering blue icebergs. For thousands of years, the Inuit (which means “the people” in their language) have inhabited this region, inhos ...

ANOTHER RIDE ON THE MERRY-GO-ROUND There are still some opportunities to be used and not all the global players have taken up their positions yet. Nevertheless, the fusion of Miller and SAB is another step towards consolidation. The US food and tobacco concern Philip Morris Cos. Inc, New York, and the South African brewery group SAB plc are going to merge and form the second largest brewing company worldwide under the name of SAB Miller plc. This will provide Morris a 24.99 per cent share of voting rights and three of the eleven seats altogether in the board of SAB Miller. It is controversially discussed, however, whether the fusion does make sense at all. Some think it is useful, because SAB will now be less exposed to fluctuations of weak currencies. Moreover, it could be a means to increase the sales in the USA. Others, on the other hand, think that the deal is not a very se ...

THE SWEETNESS OF THE TROPICS Decanters and separators for exotic fruit juices Tropical fruits are trendy. In industrialised countries, the consumer wants sun-ripened fruits, exotic fruits in his fruit basket, and the growing fruit juice consumption with the demand for new tastes is boosting demand. The tricky issue is the fruits themselves. Many exotic fruits are very sensitive directly after harvesting and would perish quickly during a long transport or storage period. This is where processes for fast and gentle treatment come into play such as decanting or separation. here are no more pineapples in Hawaii. This is not quite true in the same way that it is not quite true that there is no beer in Hawaii. But there is some truth to this statement. During the 1920s, companies such as Del Monte and Dole established huge pineapple plantations on Hawaii and started to process and market fruit flesh and pineapple juice. Most of the plantations have now been cleared to make way for the emer ...
